In Macbeth after Duncan’s murder, Macbeth can’t seem to forgive himself. Lady Macbeth who seems unaffected by the deed tells him “‘Go get some water And wash this filthy witness from your hand’” (Shakespeare 57 Act 2 Scene 1). Towards the end of the play, Lady Macbeth shows signs of the guilt sinking in by saying “‘ Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand’’ (Shakespeare 157 Act 5 scene 1). In the final acts of the play, Lady Macbeth kills herself with her own hands, not being able to withstand the guilt. In the Lion King after Simba is saved from the stampede, he finds his dad’s body. Macduff from Macbeth and Simba from The Lion King have similar journeys and outcomes but different reasons behind their journey. Macduff makes the choice to leave his wife and kids in Scotland to go to England to help raise an army with Malcolm to take defeat, Macbeth. Upon arriving in England he hears the news of his family's murder and vows to avenge them. In the end of the play, Macbeth is forced up against Macduff who is fully prepared and ready for battle. Macduff is victorious in the end and avenges his family. Unlike Macduff leaving by choice is not an option for the young king in the movie. Simba is forced to leave Pride Rock by Scar after he accuses him of killing his father. While Simba is off in the jungle his pride is overthrown by Scar and the hyenas. When Simba finally returns to face his pride he must go up against Scar for his throne.
Disney's The Lion King and Shakespeare play Macbeth convey the message that guilt will lead a person to choose good and evil through foreshadowing, motif, and foil characters.
