ELITE Team Case Study

The ELITE Team was formed after Dunlap was appointed leader of the team by Mott following the positive changes they were recently attempting to implement. Considering the limited progress Mott had with his direct reports the prior years leading up to the formation of the ELITE Team, they were using one of the skills to lead positive change, establishing a climate of positivity. Mott did so with his reports and so they carried that mentality to the newly formed ELITE Team. The team was formed of 12 of the best from all the parts and given a clearly defined objective. Being a new team, an effective leader is necessary to give a sense of direction and objective to the team. Dunlap empowers his team by reassuring everyone that “whatever solution …show more content…
This step is where most teams fail, because as work is done, employees varying working styles and perspectives surface and that can frustrate or overwhelm team members who are uncomfortable doing things a different way than they are used to. The team admits to “power struggles and finger pointing” early on so at this stage it can only be enhanced if it is not improved. The famous “rat tracks fax” was the turning point leading the team to the norming stage. This is when the team resolves their issues and frustrations with one another and can begin to socialize better and provide useful feedback to one another without feeling attacked and judged. The team used their prior mistakes to focus on the overall issues at hand. The ELITE Team then went into the performing stage of the development process by inspiring commitment and solutions to previous mistakes. The team then broke down functional barriers, improving the advertising process, creating new standards to measure customer service.
