Human trafficking is illegal, yet it happens all over the world, every single day. What is human trafficking? Merriam-Webster states that it is organized criminal activity in which human beings are treated as possessions to be controlled and exploited. There are 5 categories that human trafficking can be divided into, sexual exploitation, forced labor, domestic servitude, organ harvesting and child trafficking. Sexual exploitation is one of the biggest remaining issues going on in the world, it is not only happening overseas, which seems to be a common thought, but it is right here in our backyard. Sex trafficking is an offense under the Criminal Code of Canada and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, also according to Public safety Canada, Canada was among the first countries to ratify the United Nations Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children. When exploring the topic of sex trafficking, it is important to fully comprehend who is getting trafficked, the motives of the abusers, the methods used for capturing and forcing people into the trade, what is being done about sex trafficking and also how to spread awareness to not only help yourself, but to help and inform others as well.
