In our own lives it seems that most of us associate ourselves with the people that are beneficial for us, or they aren't and we learn from that. You may look at others around you and think to yourself, "I wouldn't dare come close to that person" maybe because of their actions, personality or just their mistakes. In the Scarlett Letter, Hester is that person, that "symbol" of wrong doing, that "creature" that everyone wants away from for their own well being.
