In times of desperation and hopelessness, people need a strong leader to look to. In the early 1860’s, America was on the verge of breaking into a Civil War. States were seceding, slavery was raging, and people were fighting over land (Milestone Events, 24). Eventually, the last straw broke the camel’s back, and America was in the midst of a Civil War. People needed someone to take charge. They were just in luck. Abraham Lincoln, the president at the time, swooped in and took charge. One of the most famous things he did was give the Gettysburg Address. The speech gave the people hope for the future, and the message from it carried on for generations. Without the war, there would be no Gettysburg Address, and people would not have learned about equality.

The battle at Gettysburg is so famous because one, so many people died, and secondly, it was a major turning point in the war. After that battle, the citizens of the United States finally realized that they needed to end the war (Milestone Events, 24). Since Lincoln was president at the time of the war, he obviously was extremely involved and has a lot of hearsay in everything.
