Any athletic student given the opportunity to enroll in any college of their choice with the cost of attendance and other expenses covered, contingent upon participating in the sport for the scholarship received decreases the burden of student loan debt in which many students accumulate after graduation. Most of these students come from poverty stricken backgrounds and wouldn’t normally being able to afford this eligibility to attend college. Receiving a scholarship and other incentives is mutual exchange for a payout. Attachment of a salary for their participation in a sport, would distract these students from graduating in a timely manner and may even cause them to discontinue their academic learning all together because they could find it difficult to sustain a balanced school and work life. College is supposed to foster an environment for individual development and promote academic achievement throughout a student’s attendance. Since a considerable amount of colleges are nonprofit the potential disruption in paying athletic students would create a competitive balance in collegiate sports. A fiscal imbalance would be the funding available for top tier public universities versus private universities especially larger institutions that bring in more revenue from their sporting programs and use excessive revenue for recruitment purposes. This mismatch in expenditures would not only negatively affect the institutions but based on the type of sport each student is a participant and their gender would cause social inequality. The institution athletic staff provide their players with a chance to commercialize themselves as a marketing brand when it’s time for professional sports recruiters to bid for players to attend their college.
The institution are aware of the athletic students’ constraint schedule between their academic schedule, strength training, competitions and social gatherings they understand the want for employment in order to afford other living expenses that comes along with the educational experience but many of these students are provided with vehicles, vacation trips, and other luxury incentives while non athletic scholarship recipient students have to work part time or full time jobs to compensate which many would find this considerably unfair.
The intercollegiate students have been awarded the opportunity to get an education and a chance to network with professional’s to get a major league contract. Reallocating the budget to compensate athletic students when they are already being funded is double dipping to the spending budget. The coaches are a valuable asset to the university’s economic growth and student body for their coaching and recruiting
