Importance Of Professionalism In The Workplace

Professionalism can be defined as doing things right at optimum cost with least defect. It captures a blend of behaviors, skills, qualities including but not limited to honesty & integrity and other specific competencies expected of individuals belonging to any given profession. Ideal qualities for today’s work force are different from what it was in previous decades. They are required not just to be physically able but also skilled and qualified for the job while maintaining the ideal image suited for the job. To meet the increasing demands of new projects and fast growing economies of today’s times there is a need for personnel who are not just professional in their fields but can also deliver maximum output with minimum input, in other words not just work hard but work smart as well. It is found to be easier for true professional to climb the corporate ladder, be the first to be considered for promotions and also be considered for undertaking niche Projects and representing the Companies they work for. In reference to a true Professional in the Oil & Gas Industry which is more Project based, along with the above summations, we could consider the 4 basic pillars classified as Planning, Organizing, Delegating and Controlling which can be used to describe professionalism in the most prominent way and it would be helpful to take into account in managing their Project for optimum output. A working example of these 4 qualities that a professional individual needs to possess is explained with a simple scenario below which could be any industry including Oil & Gas. Consider that an organization has identified a representative to maintain transactions of various subsidiary companies located in several locations. It could seem daunting at first to manage this task without a project plan especially if the task is time bound. The first suggested step involved in starting the project would be to chalk out a Project Implementation Plan as explained below. Planning - Meet the Management team to discuss the operations and budgets of the organization - Understand the business objectives and targets - Meet the team members and understand their roles in achieving these targets - Form a core Project Planning team, discuss individual planning inputs and delegate responsibilities - Set a deadline for completion of Project Implementation Plan - In-depth analysis and meetings with team members to achieve the Plan - Conduct regular one-on-one and team meetings to discuss progress - Document the plan, get Management approval to proceed and circulate to all involved parties - Replicate the Plan across various offices in different locations. Tweak the Plan to meet requirements locally for each office if different. Identify individual Project Management teams in the different locations The approved Plan is ready on paper across the various locations; the next step is organizationand mobilization of manpower to set the Plan in motion. Organizing & Delegating - Identify skillsets and workforce to delegate various aspects of the Project - Set out job responsibilities for the individuals identified after ensuring that the requirements are fulfilled - Ensure each of the personnel is aware of the required Project Output expected individually and how it affects the objective of the Organisation as a whole - Set contingency …show more content…
Also, recruiting talent may even cost more because other companies do their best to retain good staff by providing higher financial income. Professionalism in the workplace is beginning to be construed to mean someone who cares deeply about their work. This makes workers more focused on inculcating the expected values associated with their profession and hence preoccupied more with emotional labor. They are becoming more stressed out by work hence eliminating a healthy work-life balance. If balance is not maintained in professional code of ethics, employee production may slip since the focus is turned to developing a happy work environment. The public’s expectation of a company, due to past performance and professionalism, also creates more stress in the workplace as employees struggle to maintain and meet up with performance standards. To sum up our discussion, if each individual stepping out to work every day adopts one positive aspect of change in their professional attitude our world will be a much better, more conducive and a safe place to work
