The ability to communicate effectively is a vital skill in all aspects of everyday life. Specifically, relational practice refers to the ability to communicate skillfully and appropriately, while being mindful of factors such as context and interplay. This is an especially crucial in the health care setting, and therefore the development of communication skills is a critical component of nursing education.
In this paper, I will critique an interaction I had with my sister, Hannah, regarding the state of her mental health and her struggles with anxiety. I will discuss our communication styles, as well as the specific relational skills utilized in our conversation, including: the relational capacities; the skills of letting be and being in sync; types of listening and responding; types of non-listening; perception checking; the four approaches to inquiry; compliance; and vulnerability (Alder et al., 2009; Doane & Varcoe, 2005; Doane & Varcoe, 2015).
Relational capacities are a group of five skills pertaining to interpersonal practice which include: initiative, authenticity and responsiveness; mutuality and synchrony; honouring complexity and ambiguity; intentionality; and re-imagining (Doane & Varcoe, 2005).
Firstly, the capacities of initiative, authenticity, and responsiveness involves “reaching out and intending” (Doane & Varcoe, 2005, p. 193). This facilitates the creation of a meaningful connection, and I was able to fulfil this capacity. I have a close relationship…
