Why Professional Networking Matters Professional networking plays a critical role in the development of an individual’s career. Networking is about building a solid reputation over a period of time while also building long-term relationships. The key element to effectively networking is to make yourself known. If you speak with an experienced business executive they will share that professional networking will fast track one’s career. The fact is, people will do business with people they know, long before they will do business with a stranger. In order to build an effective professional network, one may seek to mentor an executive in their organizations. Effective networking involves creating authentic relationships with interesting people and connecting with those individuals on a personal and professional level. There are several important reasons for networking. First, networking strengthens relationships by forming trust and assisting one another in advancing one’s career. Since humans are hardwired to reciprocate when someone helps them, you begin to make a name for yourself in the professional arena as an important contact (Page, 2015). Additionally, networking is an excellent source for fresh ideas and new perspectives. It can be very useful to speak to individuals in different fields as they may provide a new way off viewing a problem and an alternative way of resolving. Moreover, networking raises one’s profile and is an excellent source to open new doors. According to Michael Page, Founder of The Page Group, “If you network enough, you will massively increase your odds of being in the right place at the right time” (Page, 2015, para. 5). The key is to maintain consistency throughout all social and professional platforms. There are several reasons why an individual would want to improve their brand online, including: finding a new job, promoting personal content, position themselves as a leader or promote themselves with their current employer. Networking has become a significantly required in order to avoid isolation and never become part of an office or workplace (Daewon, 2017). Furthermore, large networks have many advantages and can offer assistance within one’s professional life, including: connections for new business opportunities, gaining knowledge from interconnected business community and enhancing one’s expertise (Daewon, 2017).
