If I was treating a patient based on the concepts set forth in Era I, I would not be treating the patient holistically; instead I would be treating signs and symptoms with physical means. The power of prayer and a belief of something bigger than us would show no benefit to a nurse operating under the confines of Era I.
Comparing another difference of Era I and my personal presence is that treating the “whole person” also includes making the patient an active part of their plan of care. I am a facilitator of health and wellbeing when treating my patients. I do not dictate their medical treatment instead help the patient choice the level of engagement they wish to have in their care. The results are what I was expecting based on a previously taken personality test. When I was in college several years ago we took the Myers-Briggs type indicator (MBTI). The result from the MBTI was ESTJ, extraversion, sensing, thinking and judging. It described the personality traits of organizer, assertive, analytical and logical. At the time I took the MBTI, I did not agree with the results because I believed I was a thinker, feeler and free spirit.
The current results clearly match where I am in my life. Structure, responsibility and dependability are traits I live by. I also want to ensure I grow and learn from the results. I think there is room for improvement in regards to communication and flexibility. As a leader in the organization my staff depends on me not only to be meticulous, responsible and get the job done but also to foster relationships and professional growth. I will need to be more consonant of those who I work with to make sure my personality traits do not over power those who differ i.e.; Rationals,
