Throughout the history of time in all parts of the world people have always been getting sick. One man began to wage war against these deadly viruses in 1796 with a vaccination against smallpox. Edward Jenner noticed that during this outbreak of smallpox the milkmaids were not getting sick. He then began to develop his miracle drug. His new vaccination consisted of a sample known as cowpox, an illness common to cows and milkmaids. Jenner injected his first vaccine into James Phipps, a young local boy. While Phipps did not feel well for several days he made a full recovery from the first vaccine in history. Later Jenner injected Phipps with a sample of smallpox. The vaccine had worked! Phipps did not contract …show more content…
I believe they should be. Vaccines our way of gaining immunity from a disease without ever being sick with it. Vaccinations of entire populations can slow the spread of diseases, outbreaks, and epidemics through what is known as herd, or community, immunity. Vaccines are a very important topic in today’s society because of the recent outbreak of the Measles. Measles can be very dangerous and even deadly to young children or the immunocompromised. All children who are physically capable should be vaccinated because it is quite beneficial to our community as a whole. People who get vaccinated help protect children too young to get the vaccine, people undergoing chemotherapy, and the …show more content…
“The Institute of Medicine found insufficient evidence to suggest that pertussis can cause neurologic damage, autism, seizures, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), Reye Syndrome, or other disorders” (Betz 168). According to the CDC “one in sixty-eight children born in 2002” are expected to have autism (“Concerns About Autism”). This is a much higher statistic than previously anticipated. One reason why people think that vaccines cause autism is because of an additive known as thimerosal. Thimerosal is a mercury based preservative that was in vaccines from the 1930’s till 1999. Many people believe that thimerosal in vaccines is linked to the increased number of cases of autism in the nation (“Frequently Asked Questions About Thimerosal (Ethylmercury)”), but “evidence from several studies examining trends in vaccine use and changes in autism in children does not support an association between thimerosal and autism” (“Concerns About Autism”). There are two different types of mercury that exist known as ethylmercury and methylmercury. Ethylmercury is the main ingredient in thimerosal. It is broken down and cleared out of the body quickly. Methylmercury comes from mercury metal and can cause nervous system problems. Many people believe that ethylmercury has the same effects as
