Clearly, one of the main themes of The Marquise of O is the breakdown of communication. Each of the main characters somehow manages to fail to communicate key things that would put them leaps and bounds ahead in terms of discovering the truth about the Marquise’s strange pregnancy. Prominent instances of this communication failure are the vehement plea from the Marquise’s mother for the Marquise to tell her the truth as well as her initial dismissal of the Marquise’s answer. Accordingly, it can be seen that the communication failings concerning the mother are born from religious and social conventions that were prevalent in society during the time of the story.
The cause of the first instance of failure can be attributed to multiple things; the first thing being that the idea of a woman becoming pregnant without being aware of as to how it occurred is something only heard of in the bible and “had never yet happened to any woman on earth.” Additionally, even if there wasn’t a biblical tale already contributing to the extremely poor plausibility of the Marquise’s story, the mother would still behave the same simply because getting pregnant without being aware of it isn’t something that happens under normal circumstances.
