The human rights and diversity pillar is an essential piece in the Child and Youth Care field. It refers to the rights of children and youth and how the Child and Youth Worker (CYW) needs to ensure these rights are being respected. In regards to diversity, it can range from cultural and social backgrounds to educational abilities and physical abilities. It is important that the CYW recognizes that Toronto is a very multicultural society that is made up of various ethnic, social, and physically diverse groups. Some of these groups can feel marginalized, facing systemic barriers or have their rights violated by polices and legislation.
The CYW must play a role in the advocacy of children and youth’s rights. It is part of their job to ensure that youth feel empowered and their voices can be heard. For example, the Convention on the Rights of the Child identifies that children have the right to have a relationship with their family. Both Article 8 and 9 refer to this right “Article 8: (preservation of Identity): Children have the right to an identity – an official record of who they are. Governments should respect children’s right to a name, nationality and family ties. Article 9:(separation from parents): Children have the right to live with their parent(s), unless it is bad for them. Children whose parents do not live together have the right to stay in contact with both parents, unless this might hurt the child” (UNICEF, n.d./2014). This right is not always adhered to when it…
