From the start, she wanted to be her own person. Esperanza wasn’t happy settling for what she was supposed to become. In “My Name”, she complains about her name. Esperanza admires her grandmother for being “wild”, but is distraught at the thought of inheriting “her place by the window” (Cisneros 11). Esperanza sees that once women are married, they are expected to stay inside and keep the house in order. They lose their freedom and individuality. She does not want this. Esperanza wants to own a home and live independently. Living in a poor area is not an easy task, but with hard work and good intentions, people can come out of it okay. In “Beautiful and Cruel”, Esperanza “decided not to grow up tame like the others who lay their necks on the threshold waiting for the ball and chain” (Cisneros 88). She knows how most women in her area are treated. While some of them work to make their status better, many are not able to, or choose not to. From witnessing this, Esperanza starts planning her future at a young age. Owning a home is something she really wants to do. This shows that people with patience and good will can come out of poverty.
