As Rabindranath Tagore once said “Reach high, for stars lie hidden in you. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal.” The quote expresses the significance of dreams. The main character of the house on mango street, Esperanza, is a person that the quote best defines. A very strong girl that once dreamed big, no matter her surroundings and limitations. Throughout the novel, Esperanza goes through many life stages, as she tries to define herself, as well as she evolves from being unconfident and to a person that knows exactly what she wants from life.
First, the novel starts while Esperanza was young, unconfident, and immature but not because she was young, age is not a measurement of such things. Her immaturity is apparent when she talks about her mom holding her and says, “Sweet to put your nose into when she is holding you and you feel safe” (Cisneros 6-7). The quote shows that Esperanza is a dependent person and unconfident in her life, because when he mom holds her hands, Esperanza feels secure and confident. A great example of her maturity is when she defended her sister when she said “That’s right, I add before Lucy of Rachel can make fun of her” (Cisneros 50). She started to take more responsibilities as she grows up, mentally and physically, but every now and then she proves that she did not grow up entirely by saying “yes, it’s true. We have legs.
