Christmas: My Christmas Day

Superior Essays
Christmas Day started out like all the others we have had in the past 5 years. Dillon and I had been on our own, since his oldest brother moved out, and went on to college several years earlier, and Jonathan, the middle son, had joined the Army the year prior. Robert and I just started dating in May of 2010, but he was with us on Christmas morning and my heart was so full, I thought it would surely burst. We opened our gifts, tearing the paper off, just like little children. Christmas is by far my favorite time of the year. I had a certain excitement in the the back of my head. It wasn’t about the presents, nor the Christmas feast, nor the normal happy jolly cheer that takes place on such a special day. Instead, I was jumping up and down on …show more content…
After our gift opening ritual, I prepared a fabulous breakfast of homemade sausage gravy and biscuits. Working as a manager for Bojangles’ for almost 13 years, gave me an edge in the gravy department. But anyway, we all gathered around the table for breakfast. After finishing up the dishes, we prepared to go to Robert’s mother’s house to open gifts and eat a hearty Christmas feast, that I was assured would be out of this world. Abby’s mom, was to meet me at in Concord, so I could take her with me on our trip. We loaded up the truck and were on our way, listening to Christmas carols on the radio, trying to out sing each other. The weather channel, made an emergency interruption announcement, that a huge snow storm was headed our …show more content…
The Charlotte area was not supposed to get hit until later on Christmas night or into the next morning. I held my breath for a short moment while the announcer spoke, but soon realized we were in the clear, and as long as we were at the airport by 4:00 p.m. for our 6:00 p.m. flight, we were good to go, so we quickly resumed our singing contest, and continued on toward Abby and Concord. Dinner was everything I hoped it would be, me and Abby couldn’t help to keep looking at our watches, as the clock seemed to be not moving at all. Already planning in my head the look on my son and his family’s faces when we landed, and the joy that I would feel, holding my other granddaughter Charlize. Tick-tock, tick-tock, oh my goodness only one more hour until we head to the airport. Just as I turned to let Robert know we would need to leave soon, a weather advisory came across the television. No, I said to myself, I will not believe it. It cannot be happening. They announced that the snow would start to fall a lot earlier than expected, and predicted it would start falling in an about one hour. I still would not accept

The following article entitled “The Blizzard of ‘93 Seeking to Save Cities and People; Michigan Students, Caught in Appalachian Snow, Learn Lesson in Survival” was initially published in March 16, 1993, written by Isabel Wilkerson. It was 11:45 pm, we had the car packed, the moving truck loaded and on its way, and all of our goodbyes said to our family and friends, and set out to our new home in Georgia. It took us about 13-14 hours, but we finally arrived at 1:23 pm having driven the entire night, exhausted but still eager to see what is in Georgia. When we stepped out of the car for the first time, we were welcomed by a brisk December afternoon with a light breeze, something completely different from the sweltering heat of the south that we were told about. After adjusting ourselves from sitting for so long, we went and started trying to get everything settled. Once everything was settled, we started our first day of school.…

A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, is a beloved tale that people of all ages have loved for its emotional and moral appeal. It is a story focusing on the life of Ebenezer Scrooge, a greedy and cold-hearted money-lender, who is visited by four ghostly apparitions who convince him together to change his merciless ways. At the beginning of this tale, Scrooge does not recognize the effects of his greed, so the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future take it upon themselves to show him how much his greed can hurt the people around him. Needless to say, greed is the central theme of Dickens’ beloved novella, and it is revealed by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future, in order to change Scrooge’s curmudgeonly ways. Upon seeing A Christmas Carol on the night of Friday, November 18th, I had what I thought to be a firm understanding of the Charles Dicken’s classic. It was until the show was over that I realized my previous interpretation was completely senseless, with little to no opinion deriving beyond the script. As I dove into the performance in the Joan C, Edwards playhouse, I made personal connections that I had never made before when watching other adaptions of A Christmas Carol, in particular Scrooge (1970), my father’s favorite. Every detail of this performance aided in my overwhelming positive review, asserting this play as my favorite of all the revisions I have seen.…
