This submarine earthquake, provided the initial disturbance in the height of the ocean’s surface. For a short time after the earthquake, the motion of the tsunami was governed by a linear wave pattern, until it entered shallower coastal regions where it became large and destructive as it approached the shore. A Linear pattern is repeated indefinitely in either direction along a line. This meaning when the earthquake hit it went in lines out to the main countries that were around the Indian Ocean.
The pattern of worst damage and deaths can be plotted by using a timeline.
