However, our society also got worse. 9/11 made our economy become in extreme debt. This debt was caused by enhanced surveillance in airports, spending, security, and the war in Afghanistan which costed the US over two trillions dollars. The government wasn’t expecting to have such a lack of money so American taxes were raised to help larger corporations to stay running. Society changed a lot in Manhattan, New York. Their drug and alcohol use skyrocketed through the roof. With 25% more alcohol use, 10% more cigarette use, and 3% more marijuana use Manhattan was not as lively was it was before. The biggest effect that 9/11 had on Americans was that they were traumatized by the events that took place that morning.
