There are many situations that can impact our society and personal lives. One particular event that could have greatly affected me is September 11, 2001. On this Tuesday morning everyone went to work or school just as any other day, clueless of what lied ahead of them. This is the day that millions of American lives would change forever. Four terrorist attacks, which targeted United States landmarks to destroy them, all lead by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaueda. From the Twin-Towers in New York City to the White House in Washington D.C, hijacked planes were on their way to make history. These attacks ending up killing almost 3,000 people and injuring over 6,000. After this day society would never be the same.
Families all across the country were calling loved ones in the East Coast to make sure they were safe. Some getting devastating news. My family was one of the lucky ones. However, our society also got worse. 9/11 made our economy become in extreme debt. This debt was caused by enhanced surveillance in airports, spending, security, and the war in Afghanistan which costed the US over two trillions dollars. The government wasn’t expecting to have such a lack of money so American taxes were raised to help larger corporations to stay running. Society changed a lot in Manhattan, New York. Their drug and alcohol use skyrocketed through the roof. With 25% more alcohol use, 10% more cigarette use, and 3% more marijuana use Manhattan was not as lively was it was before. The biggest effect that 9/11 had on Americans was that they were traumatized by the events that took place that morning. Many people suffered sleeping disorders which led to nightmares and depression. Society was not the same as it was before this tragic
