Cognitive Skills When it comes to cognitive skills there is no better place to start then the four stages of Piaget’s Cognitive Development. Psychologist Jean Piaget believed that children had to progress through for stages in order to cognitively develop. In class we discovered that Piaget once observed his own children to understand the process. Piaget believed that children had to go through all four stages to understand the world around them. This stage is -between the ages of 7-11 years old. In this stage children develop a better understanding of how others may feel. They realize that not everyone sees the same or has the same thought process as they do. Children during this stage start to think more logically. The Final stage of Paiget’s cognitive development is Formal Operational Theory. In this stage it begins in adolescent and carries over the rest of the individual’s adulthood. This stage includes the individual to develop idea more logically. Individuals use more reasoning and comprehension then what was used in prior stages. For problems that may occur the individual may have various solutions instead of the typical one answer.
Based on the conversation that took place with Javier and on his responses. Javier seems to fit in between Concrete Operational and Formal Operational Theory. Most of his thought process and way of thinking is still in the Concrete Operational. In the conversation Javier makes various statements on how his brother was either bothered or upset a certain times during their trip. This gives us the understanding that Javier knows that not everyone sees the things the way he does. As an educator you have to be able to point out how you can best serve your students. This project provided a great deal of information and knowledge on the components of language. The project gave a great understanding on how to transcribe a conversation but also point out what the student was doing wrong in each component of language. I learned that every component is very important in order to have understanding of communication. Starting from Phonology and how words sound and as well as how they should be pronounced. This component is very important especially for someone that may have a speech impediment or has trouble sounding out certain syllables. Morphology follows right after phonology and its rules are how the words are built or put together. Being able to utilize prefixes and suffix at certain times is a big portion of this component. Syntax is just as important. Syntax is how are sentences are formed, sentence structure. At various age levels there are many individuals that have problems with syntax. One of the easiest ways I was able to understand syntax was utilizing subject and then verb. I found this very interesting since in other languages it is verb and then subject. This project also gave a better understanding of semantics. The meaning of words.
