Phonic Approach Strategies

Case Study 1

If I had a student who was struggling in class with my phonics approach, and needed a different approach, I would try several different strategies that we learned about in Chapter 7 of our textbook this week.

The first strategy that I would employ would be “Letter Actions a consonant based strategy” (Vacca, et al., 2015, p. 191,192). This strategy is great for those learning how to read, but having difficulty with the words. In this strategy the sounds of the consonants are associated with action words. For example, C could be used with words like cut or S could be used with words like sip. Additionally, this is a great strategy no only for struggling students, but also for ELL students. 206). This would give my struggling students a chance to feel confident if they were able to learn some of the words that are used everyday in many different ways. Teaching the students these words and then using them in activities is a great way for me as a teacher to give my students confidence in their ability to learn to read. As it states in the textbook, these words are used daily and are “grammatically necessary” (Vacca, et al., 2015, p. 209). If I have children struggling to learn phonics, I can help build their confidence with learning words that are used on a daily basis and in many different ways. For example, as a teacher I could read a poem to my students and then afterward have them use an orange or yellow crayon over the sight words or “high-frequency words” that are found through the poem. I could then progress to small books that they can read to themselves with these words in them to build their confidence in reading. The textbook also mentions that this is a good strategy for ELL students (Vacca, et al., 2015, p. 206). Being able to teach ELL students these constantly used words can increase their vocabulary. This helps many students to become more proficient in not just learning in school, but also out of school as they are better able to understand words and phrases used in everyday

An ELL intermediate level students is classified as a student who is capable of participating in most classroom activities with some misunderstanding. They may be able to do academic level work with frequent writing and vocabulary support. Therefore, they are beyond the Tier one vocabulary which is common, known words associated with every day conversations. Because of the necessity for verbal support, these students exhibit the need to be exposed to high-frequency vocabulary which bridges the Tier one and Tier Three vocabulary framework.…

Developing Reading Proficiency In the article Children Teach Themselves to Read, Peter Gray offers a perspective on how and when your children should be taught to read. Or, rather, why your children shouldn’t be taught to read. Unfortunately, many schools are still convinced that children should be inundated with methods like phonics so every child in one grade can be on the same level. The underlying problem with this is that children are individuals; different methods of learning work for different children.…

For strategy section IV, I selected the strategy read-aloud plus because I believed I could successfully incorporate this strategy into my lessons in order to fully benefit Sophia. I chose to implement this strategy because it would provide Sophia with the most beneficial learning experience possible. This strategy is important because it incorporates the modeling of fluent expressive reading of English text with techniques for clarifying vocabulary, while periodically checking for understanding and providing activating knowledge to help make connections between text and personally experiences. This strategy involves the teacher reading the text aloud to the student while providing periodic paraphrasing and other extensions. 3.…

Whole Word Stephen Krashen states that “whole language” another term for whole word involves instilling a love of literature, problem solving and critical thinking, collaboration, authenticity and personalized learning (2002, p. 32). Bette Bergeron in her paper on what the term whole language means found that there is a wide discrepancy amongst those that believe in whole word with research results that showed that twenty three point four percent felt that it was a philosophy while thirty four point four feel that it is an approach (1990, p.312). Scholars allude to the fact that when reading phonetically a child has difficulty understanding the full meaning of the text and if they only read it once or twice may not understand the context…

An evidence based practice that I came across in my research was an article titled, Literacy and Evidence-Based Practice in Deaf Education. This study talks about students with hearing disabilities in reading, vocabulary, and organizing concepts. In their studies they saw that the reading ability of those that had a visual impairment was above average, so they suggested no more than twelve minutes a day reading and spending more time on their vocabulary. There are three tiers of vocabulary that humans have. The first tier are words that you expect the student to know but they may not know.…
