The four stages are sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational (Lefmann & Orme, p. 641). The sensorimotor stage is the period in which infants only see and recognize what is in front of them (Cherry, 2017). Infants focus on themselves and what directly affects them. Although Destiny’s case started after this, she surely showed characteristics just like any other infant. This stage lasts from birth to eighteen months or two years (Lefmann & Orme, p. 641). 641). Children become less self-centered, and more aware of surrounding events (Cherry, 2017). During this stage, Destiny begins to realize the treatment she is getting is not normal, it does not happen to everyone, and she asks for help. This period lasts from ages seven to eleven (Cherry, 2017). The last stage of cognitive development is the formal operational stage (Lefmann & Orme, p. 641). This occurs after the age of eleven and through adulthood (Cherry, 2017). At this point, children and adolescents are developing advanced thinking and problem-solving skills (Cherry, 2017). Destiny is currently in the last stage. She is making good and healthy decisions for her life that are evidence of her overcoming some
