The Four Emphasized Areas of Art in Education

The National Summary Statement summarizes what every young American should know and be able to do in the arts. It is focused on four areas of emphasis: dance, music, theatre and visual arts. The scope of the summary statement is grades K-12 and speaks to both content and achievement. (National Standards for Arts Education) In this essay I will first describe the four areas of emphasis in art education and then provide recommendations of how the four areas of emphasis could be taught based on current research studies and theoretical constructs related to art.

In the artistic sense the above definition applies but with a combination of drawing, composition and other aesthetic considerations in order to manifest the conceptual and expressive intention of the creator. * Print making: creating for artistic purposes an image on a matrix which is then transferred to a two dimensional surface by means of ink or pigmentation. * Photography: process of making pictures by means of the action of light (timed exposure). * Filmmaking: process of making a motion-picture. * Computer art: any art in which computers played a role in production or display of the artwork. * Sculpture: three dimensional artwork created by shaping or combing hard materials-typically stone or marble, metal, glass, wood. Softer materials can also be used, ceramics, clay etc. * Plastic arts: art forms which involve physical manipulation of a plastic medium by molding or modeling.
Now that I have defined the four areas of emphasis it is necessary to give some thoughts on what I can do as a teacher to teach these four areas based on current research studies and theories. First, as according to the National Standards Summary Statement, students need to be taught certain capabilities “to allow them to arrive at their own knowledge, beliefs, and values for making personal and artistic decisions”.
