Besides the almanac and the clock Benjamin Banneker was also appointed by George
Washington to be part of of the group who mapped out and planned how to build Washington
D.C. The head architect Pierre-Charles L’Enfant suddenly quit and took the plans with him so the design team was stuck with nothing, but Banneker memorized L’Enfants plans by heart and finished the city. Thats not all though Benjamin also sent letters to the secretary of state Thomas
Jefferson because Jefferson spoke against racism and treating people unfairly because of race and or beliefs but, Jefferson owned slaves. Him and Benjamin sent letters back and forth until finally Jefferson apologized about it, freed the slaves and spoke against slavery. Taking an anti-slavery political stance in the late eighteenth century was not of the popular opinion; however, Thomas Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence, did just that. The irony lies within the fact that Jefferson himself had slaves on his plantation Monticello, which causes one to wonder as if he really wanted the blacks to be free in America. On his plantation, he did not pay any of his slaves, or give them any compensation, besides room and board, that was different to how other whites treated their slaves. In Jefferson’s piece, Notes on the State of Virginia, he showcases his unpopular opinion that slaves should not be kept; rather, he suggests freeing them and allowing them to live in their own community—away from…

In the draft of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson condemned England for forcing slavery upon America, and then using the slaves to combat the American Revolution. He believed that slaves were justifiable enemies and that the presence of slavery would destroy the Republic. Although Jefferson believed that no man had the right to enslave another, he did not believe that Blacks were equal to whites. Slavery did in fact become a polarizing policy, and the division between Americans led to the cession of southern states and a Civil War. The problems leading to and the resolutions of the war proved to be just as complicated as Thomas Jefferson’s views on race and slavery.…

In his Notes on the State of Virginia, Jefferson discusses religion extensively. Jefferson defines freedom as allowing citizens to express themselves without fear of government or church persecution. He firmly believed in separation of church and state. Jefferson then goes on to use his religious beliefs to show that he prefers rural life to the urban life. Jefferson writes that, “Those who labour in the earth are the chosen people of God, if ever he had a chosen people, whose breasts he has made his peculiar for substantial and genuine virtue” (165).…

First of all, what an amazing read (and movie, of course). I was kind of dreading having to read, what ended up being, 12 pages, but I sure am I glad I did.
