The Queensland Ballet astonishes audiences once again during their adaptation of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet production ‘The Firebird’. This mesmerising performance pulsated with character, emotion and spectacular choreography from The Royal Ballet choreographic award winner, Liam Scarlett.

Laura Hidalgo and Rian Thompson, share a palpable erotic charge in Firebird. Picture: David Kelly
The Firebird follows a simple tale of good versus evil. As the wicked immortal, Koschei and the good but mischievous Firebird taunt each other in the moonlit tragic garden with Koschei’s harem of beautiful captive girls and a mob of evil creatures. Koschei has a new captive,

His entrance is accompanied by low-pitched instrumentation which sets the mood of the performance as dark, magical and devilish. Rian Thompson’s portrayal of the character captured the villainous intentions of Koschei through his fast and sharp movements, such as turns, travelling steps and facial expressions. As the Firebird appears before the immortal Koschei the mood of music and movement lightens as both creatures exude magical powers. The role of the Firebird performed by Laura Hidalgo was danced delightfully, as her fast flittering movements shown through travelling steps, jumps and kicks were perfectly birdlike as they showed precision and exquisite technique. As the Firebird stood before Koschei, the dancers engaged in partner work where the choreographed lines and extension of the arms and legs, paired with opposing dynamics demonstrated the theme of good versus evil. Their taunting of one another is interrupted by the appearance of two arrows, signalling the arrival of an unknown guest, the Prince. Joel Woellner was excellent in his role of Prince Ivan as his extension, turns and kicks showed flawless ballet technique. The par de deux danced between Prince Ivan and the Firebird exhibited strength in difficult choreography. Both dancers demonstrated gorgeous extensions and attention to detail through lifts and partner travelling

In the beginning and at the end they played some old Italian type music as the dancers moved as one person and this gave the impression of a sort of warm family vibe throughout this section. There was also an instance of an extremely loud and almost uncomfortable sound during a portion in the middle which allowed the mood of the audience to switch to disturbed or uneasy, which was simultaneously reflected in their dancing and movements on and off the main “dancing portion” of the stage. A powerful instance which occurred a couple times was when the music shut off completely and there was only the audiences breathing, and the heavy panting of the dancers that could be heard throughout the theatre. This clearly intentional choice not only made the concept intriguing, but it allowed the audience to a feel a level of connect and grounding with the dancers as well. Much of the music reflected the different colour changes on screen as it was more serene during the cloud projection, but it was fast and very loud when the screen went to red.…
