The opening stage direction and setting description create a calm and soothing mood of the town. I felt a mood of soothing when the text stated, “You can almost feel the warm breath of the brown river beyond the river warehouses with their faint redolences of banana and coffee. This illustrates how the atmosphere of Elysian fields is pleasant and peaceful due to the river and the scents around town. The effect that is created with the “blue piano” is that it is a part of New Orleans culture. At the beginning of the scene, Blanche is taking a bath. Why? What is symbolic about this bath?
Blanche is taking a bath after she had drank too much and is reminiscing after losing the Belle Rive. The symbolism the bath holds is that when a person takes a bath, they are trying to clean themselves. Blanche is attempting to clean herself of the past. This is the reason for Blanche bathing so often, to cleanse herself frequently of past encounters.
2. Why is Stella taking Blanche out for the evening? What is Stanley’s reaction?
Stella is taking Blanche out for the evening because it is Stanley’s poker night. Stella states, “I’m taking Blanche to Galatoire’s for supper and then to a show, because it’s your poker night.” Stanley’s reaction was indifferent about how Blanche felt. How does Stanley react when Stella tells him to wait outside with her? Why do you think he acts this way?
When Stanley is told by Stella to wait outside with her, he responds in a very dominant and disrespectful manner saying, “ since when do you give me orders?”. I think Stanley acts this way because he is so used to being the head of the household and having Stella listen to him that it is a shock for him to have her speak like that. In Scene 1, Stanley just yells catch and throws a piece of meat, showing his dominance, so when Stanley’s dominance is tested, he gets shocked.
5. What does Blanche have to say about truth and illusion? Explain/interpret
While Stanley and Blanche are having a conversation Blanche goes on to say how “a woman’s charm is fifty percent illusion”. Blanche’s reason for lying is so that she can create an illusion of herself that she is attractive. This can be related back to her fake jewelry costume and they way she presents herself to other people which very might be all an illusion. Blanche also tells Stanley how if there is an important matter, she will always tell the truth. When it comes down to it, Blanche knows when to stop the lies and tell the truth.
