The first story arc of the play ends with the audience clapping and giving the inmates a standing ovation. The next scene turns to silence as the inmates return to their cells, which ends the second story arc. It reminds you that sadly, even though the inmates did a great job, they are still just that: inmates. Although they were exposed to art and in a sense a bit of freedom, they still had to return to their cell because they did commit a crime. Additionally, unfortunately some will never be able to experience that art or freedom again, as some are in there for life, which makes complete freedom impossible. It makes you sympathize with them because you see the potential they have to do something better than just commit crimes. Society usually view criminals as beneath them and the lowest scum on earth. Very rarely does one realize that the inmate they are dehumanizing is actually a living, breathing person who has emotions and isn’t just dirt on the ground. They have talents, or even may be intelligent. The movie portrays them as people who have talent and showing emotions and wanting to do the best they can do for the production. It is sad to see that people with potential have to rot away in prison because of bad choices they chose to make. It makes you realize that one mistake can cost you your freedom, and that no amount of good you do, or how well you accomplish something can erase that. It can make the audience remember to always make choices
