This quote portrays that the soul confesses any mistakes he made in order for the judges to decide whether it goes to Osiris. This sense of morality follows another text, Visions of Tondal. In the text, there is no judgement where a soul is taken to court and tried but it can be shown that Tondal witnesses what hell is like. In each plate that Tondal crosses, every soul in the underworld is tortured in a different way and it is told by the angel the sins that they made. Realizing how committing mistakes can lead you to the underworld, Tondal beings to wonder if he committed any sins and after returning to his body he starts becoming a better man by performing good deeds before death comes for him. Although there is no court system, this text portrays about how morality can influence in your judgement. In Greek culture, judgement is based on strength by Hermes. According to a painting that was made by a Sappho painter in early 5th century BC, a scale is used to measure souls based on strength. If the man is weak, he is tossed into the underworld where he is ruled by Hades who tortures them in Hell. Death is believed to be an everlasting rest and is the next step afterlife is complete. There are multiple ways people look at death: Some believe it’s a reincarnation and some who say it’s an afterlife. I believe that Death is both feared and enticing. In the film, A Matter of Life and Death, every character seemed fearful towards death. It was fearful when Peter could not say his last goodbye to his family in person when he knew death was coming for him as well as June who was worried about Peter dying when he was undergoing brain surgery or even his life when he radioed her in order to ask her to send his love to his sister and family. When relating to other texts, Death was served as a gateway to another world and was not a pleasurable experience to some souls as they have suffered in their lives. In the film, I believe the stairway was one of the ways that the people use to reach the other world after death. The entrance to the other worlds was different in other texts where they were gates and each layer that was passed, there was a different environment. For example, Inanna went to the underworld to visit Ereshkigal and was stripped of her clothes when going through each gate. Dante went through each layer in purgatory and had P’s on his forehead that was removed by the angels. In addition, I view death to also be
