In the novel The Fault in our Stars by John Green it shows the reader the suffering not only with the main characters Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters but their family as well. Suffering is an experience that involves physical and mental pain from a sense of loss or a feeling of powerlessness about a series of events.
Not only is this book about Hazel and Augustus suffering together, but the secondary characters suffer as well. The letter was not only about how badly Hazel wanted a sequel for the book, but also about Augustus’ views on Hazel as well as his struggle with the Cancer. In the letter Gus told us about how he wished Hazel wouldn’t make it out of the ICU so she didn’t have to have to watch him suffer and die. This was the last thing he wanted to put her through. “I just held her hand and tried to imagine the world without us and for a second I was a good enough person to hope she died so she would never have to know I was going to. I left my scar” (Green 313). Augustus wanted to live in isolation after finding out the news, but it would hurt Hazel more than anything in the world. As Hazel read the letter the reader got to see the suffering Augustus did in private to try to make Hazel believe he was better than he actually was.
