Before meeting Augustus, Hazel rarely enjoyed communicating with others. Her mother realized this, as Hazel states “my mother decided I was depressed, presumably because I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, ate infrequently, and devoted quite a bit of my abundant free time thinking about death.” (Green 3) This quote from the book was before Hazel started to be more comfortable with others. …show more content…
Hazel begins to change and slowly fall in love with him. When they return from the Anne Frank house, Hazel says “I love you, Augustus Waters,” (Green 206) expressing that she no longer thinks of him as a friend anymore.
This novel shows Hazel being more open, losing respect for a once idolized author, and accepting love. She realizes by the end of the story that her life is too short to be cautious about showing emotion, instead of pushing feelings away she embraces them. If a person feels strongly about someone, the right thing to do is admit it. And if that ends in pain, let it be
