The Family 1941 Analysis

I chose to analyze the The Family - 1941 portray for this essay because I like the usage of the colors on this work. I feel confident analyzing colors in artworks because I learned about the emotions transmitted through colors in various art classes that I took in High School and College. Most art professors like to stress the importance of color in a work of art. They say that the understanding of the usage of the colors in a piece is important when criticizing an artwork. Colors are very important in an art work because it can give away a lot of information about the emotional state of the work. It looks like they are in the kitchen of their house because we can see a piece of bread and the salt holder but the place looks small to fit all of them at the same time. Bearden doesn’t show a lot of the house in the picture. He was focused in showing the characters of the picture rather than the place they are at. The house doesn’t seem to receive a lot of light from outside or inside. The lighting of the picture is dark, there is nothing giving the picture life or brightness. There is nothing in bright colors to maybe indicate that there is some peace in the house. The only thing that is bright and looks like is peaceful is the baby’s white onesie. I believe Bearden decided to give the baby a white onesie because the baby has no idea of what it is happening. He doesn’t have feeling to express in that moment so he is wearing a peaceful, bright and the neutral color. Hu huh u huh u uh jon o We can discover a lot about a person or an art work by the color that we see on them. This portray has very interesting colors. The painter mixed warm and cool color from the color scheme to show us the feelings of his characters. The mom is wearing a red blouse in the picture. Red in the color scheme is a warm color that means love and joy. The father is wearing a blue jacket and blue is a cool color that means cold and lack of sentiment. The father is looking straight away, with tired and indifferent eyes. He doesn’t want to hear what his wife have to say and is asking her to stop and be quiet. The mother’s gaze is in something in front of them. Her eyes are bigger and she seems to be giving more attention to things than the man. We can see in her eyes that she is sad to be spoken that way. She is not happy with the scene or the situation that she is in. The baby has his gaze on the table but I believe we can’t take in consideration the baby’s gaze because he doesn’t fully understand what is
