In 1970, the Beatles break up, and a Palestinian group hijacks five planes. In 1971, the London Bridge is brought to the US and the UK changes their currency system to decimal systems for currency. In 1972, the Watergate scandal begins and pocket calculators are introduced. Also in this year, Mark Spitz Wins Seven Gold Medals. In 1973, the Sears Tower is built and the US pulls out of Vietnam. In 1974, the Terracotta Army is discovered in China and Mikhail Baryshnikov Defects. In 1975, the Cambodian Genocide begins, and Microsoft is founded. Also in that same year, there are two assassination attempts on President Gerald Ford’s life. In 1976, the first Ebola virus is found in Sudan and Zaire. In 1977, Elvis is found dead and Star Wars is released. In 1978 the first test-tube baby is born and John Paul the Second becomes Pope. In 1979, Mother Teresa is awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and there is a nuclear accident at Three Mile Island. Important people in the 1970’s, were a mix and match group of different ethnicities and a whole variety of different ways they influenced the world, for good or for worse. Starting off and number one, Richard Nixon. Nixon was the first to resign from office because of the Watergate scandal. Right after him, came his Vice President, Gerald Ford. Ford was also the first President to ever be elected by Congress into office. Ford also pardoned Nixon for “crimes against the United States”, believing Nixon had America’s best interest at…
