The evidence is strewn throughout the book, on page 76, Elie is writing that a very religious Rabbi had lost his faith. “He was not alone in having lost his faith during those days of selection… ‘It’s over. God is no longer with us.’”. Whereas on page 67 Elie is questioning his own faith, “Why would I bless Him(God)? Every fiber in me rebelled.…
Throughout years in history, the Jewish people were always alive and strong even though many people tried to suppress them. The Gift of the Jews, a bestselling book written by Thomas Cahill went all the way back to the origins of the Jewish people and why they are important today. The book was a delight and interesting read, from learning about Avraham and his sons to different scriptures. I grew up in a moderately Jewish household. We kept kosher, or tried to at least, have Shabbat dinner, and would go to synagogue moderately.…
In this chapter, Oswalt focuses on the topic of transcendence, and he finds a fundamental principle for the biblical worldview in the concept of transcendence. Per Oswalt, there are eleven features of the biblical worldview that are different to the mythic worldview: (1) monotheism, (2) iconoclasm, (3) first principle is Spirit, (4) absence of conflict in the creation process, (5) high view of humanity, (6) the reliability of God, (7) God is supra-sexual, (8) Sex is desacralized, (9) prohibition of magic, (10) ethical obedience as a religious response, and (11) the importance of human-historical activity (Oswalt, 2009.). Oswalt provides us with the characteristics of biblical thought with the two being monotheism (belief in the existence of…
The Day The Jews Were Saved They were lost. They were scared. They had lost all hope for themselves.…
“We are all alone, trapped in these bodies and our own minds, and whatever company we have in this life is only fleeting and superficial,” writes Jennifer Niven in her novel, All The Bright Places. In the year 1942, Elie Wiesel is unwaveringly loyal to God and he is a young boy full of potential. When he and his family are deported in 1944, his entire life changes over the course of a few days. In his memoir detailing his experiences during the Holocaust, he writes of the events that had occurred within the camps. For many of the events in Night, Elie does not disclose his exact emotions during the time, but his mere descriptions reflect his gradual loss of hope.…
As an Orthodox Jew, it is of great importance to me that I live in the ways taught by the Hebrew Bible (Torah) as a man of principal and give back to my community. Every week, I volunteer at my local synagogue as a cantor and recite a portion of the Torah to my congregation. Doing so isn’t such an easy task; rather it requires a good amount of effort and time in preparation. With the busy schedule a dual-curriculum brings along, it is of necessity that I manage my time wisely in order to practice and become proficient in the recitation so that there will be no mistakes. Although I may be overwhelmed at times with schoolwork or work around the house, my commitment to my congregation never waivers because the reward is so much greater.…
A Life in the Day of a Jew in Hiding I awake at 6:30 to the terrifying sound of thousands of bombs going off around me and stifle the scream that always seems to rise up in my throat, begging for me to let it out. I wearily crawl out of the warm, cosy bed that has been my refuge for the past 12 hours and enter the realms of reality. I hear the gentle pounding of feet against the floor and know that it must be almost breakfast time. My family and I always eat our breakfast at exactly 7am: it’s when the BBC radio is broadcasted. I listen to the radio with wide open ears: hoping for news of redemption; dreading the news of…
Goebbels’ most horrid depiction of the Jewish peoples was when he made the major films called “The eternal Jew” (1940) this was a propaganda film that showed the History of the Jewish culture and how they disrupt the peaceful lands/societies that preexisted. He also made the fill jus side which was about a Jewish financial consultant called Oppenheimer that was the duke taxes counter. The duke mysteriously died, causing the consultant to be automatically tried and convicted then sentenced to death. With the help of Goebbels, he changed the story from a Jewish allegory to a story of Jewish self-greed. This was the major switch that made the German peoples turn of the Jewish and was close to the beginning of the holocaust.…
Judaism’s holy book, the Torah, addresses the special status accorded to man in the cosmos and the relationship between man and God as sui generis or unique (Sarna 15). There is a clear focus on the creation of man because in no other description of let there be, does the book of Genesis describe what something is made out of. Only when speaking about man is a unique position and description emphasized. Man holds a special relationship with God that other beings do not hold since mankind alone has the breath of life blown into him by God. The pinnacle of Gods creations is man, yet after Adam and Eve’s single sin God banished them from the perfect world in the Garden of Eden.…
Being born into a Jewish family in Mexico, religion was constantly present through my childhood. I went to a Kosher, Jewish school from Pre-K to second grade, where Hebrew and Jewish history were as an integral part of school as math and science. Although my family is not orthodox, we did celebrate all of the Jewish holidays from Hanukkah to Tish’a B’Av. It was only when me, my parents, and my sister moved to Florida, that I left the tight knit Jewish community that I had been a part of for my entire life. I began attending an irreligious school where I was no longer surrounded by people like me; on the contrary, I was one of only few Jewish kids in my classes.…
The meaning of Messianic Judaism is explained by Rabbi David Chernoff as “a movement of Jewish people who believe that Yeshua (Jesus Hebrew) is the promised savior (Chernoff 1).” The messianic movement welcomes the gentile or Christians and Jews alike to join together for worship. The rituals of the Messianic Congregation are the same as Judaism, including the observing of the traditions and holidays of the Jewish people with one main difference in belief. The difference being, in Rabbinic Judaism Jesus is not considered to be the “anointed one” and Rabbis are to be still looking for the Messiah. The Messianic movement has been around for over two thousand years.…
The mission: To broaden my world and open my mind up to something new by attending a different worship service than my own religion. I am a practicing Roman Catholic, baptized at two months old and have been attending church ever since. I made all of my sacraments growing up, and now my wife and I are raising our children Catholic as well. My wife and I do not consider ourselves super religious; we are not blind followers of the church and often disagree with some of the teachings of the church. We have been to other worship services at Christian Churches and Baptist Churches on occasion for special events, etc.…
I felt my heart pounding in my chest. I knew I was next, but my demons caused me to doubt myself. As I heard my name called, I slowly rose from my seat, and looked around me, and stole a glance at my brother. The small smile he gave me filled me with the courage I needed to approach the microphone. As I looked over the podium, I scanned the crowd.…
It has been 71 years since the end of the Holocaust, the event which ended up with six million Jews exterminated; the word “Genocide” was born, and the faith in God for the many of those who survived is challenged. Elie Wiesel, through his book, Night, narrated his experience in Auschwitz. It was where most of his family was not survive, where he had to see the scene of death, and where his God “were killed”. Throughout the story, the author showed that a person’s faith in God can be tested when he or she had to suffer from starvation, struggling, and witnessing people who were massively killed under the order of the Nazis. At the beginning, the faith of Elie Wiesel was questioned by himself as he saw the adults, children, men, and women who…
Life for Jews under Christian rule has not been easy over the centuries. Starting in the late 1400’s Sephardic Jews have been dealing with a great deal of oppression prior to their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Their expulsion incited a massive movement of Sephardic Jews who were forced to pick up their things and move out of Spain. As a result, most fled across Europe in hope of finding a suitable country to relocate too without facing persecution. Although many Jews fled East, the ones that journeyed West to neighboring region Portugal faced a much more immediate sentence.…
