Personal Narrative: My Jewish Family

Being born into a Jewish family in Mexico, religion was constantly present through my childhood. I went to a Kosher, Jewish school from Pre-K to second grade, where Hebrew and Jewish history were as an integral part of school as math and science. Although my family is not orthodox, we did celebrate all of the Jewish holidays from Hanukkah to Tish’a B’Av. It was only when me, my parents, and my sister moved to Florida, that I left the tight knit Jewish community that I had been a part of for my entire life. I began attending an irreligious school where I was no longer surrounded by people like me; on the contrary, I was one of only few Jewish kids in my classes. For the first time in my life, I was no longer under the constant influence of other

My eighty-three year old grandfather handed me an overwhelmingly thick book titled “Sheils Family History” and said, “Here; look through this. Maybe you’ll run into one of these people.” I suppressed a laugh, thinking of the near zero probability of me “running into” one of my distant family members as I travelled abroad for the next two weeks. However impatient, I sat quietly listening to my grandpa chirp away about our ancestors and his war stories, while I pictured myself for the next fourteen days in a completely new place.…

For all intents and purposes this congregational study completely unfamiliar from the tradition which I currently worship. I decided it would be interesting, and challenging as well as unfamiliar to my own tradition a Jewish Synagogue. My choice was Rodef Shalom Synagogue in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh, not far from my home. My intention was to attended a Saturday morning worship service, however, due to my unfamiliarity of Jewish services I consequently found myself attending a Bar Mitzvah. With enormous anticipation, and excitement the service surprisingly was very much in concept as a traditional Christian baptism of young children who have openly confessed their love of Christ, yet in comparison like nothing I had ever experienced.…

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

Race is, according to Merriam-webster.com (2015), “any one of the groups that human beings can be divided into based on shared distinctive physical traits”. One’s race is something that is usually noticed right away. Oftentimes, race has traits that are visibly distinguishable. These distinguishable traits include skin color, which is the most visible distinguished trait regarding race, hair texture, and other facial features. When individuals come from interracial marriages, which is a child born from parents of different races, these physical traits can become blurred (Healey & O’Brien, 2015, p. 16-18).…

I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

On my first day as a teacher at the Jewish Kids Group, I realized the most difficult part about my task for the week would be teaching nine-year-olds the evil reality of slavery. The experience of the Jewish people is riddled with poverty, exile and persecution, and the holiday of Passover recounts both the joyous exodus from Egypt but also the plight of the Jewish people in bondage. The freedom my people now enjoy and cherish is inextricably linked to the suffering my ancestors endured throughout history. In other words, a holiday like Passover cannot be understood or properly celebrated without recognizing the wickedness of Pharaoh and the atrocities he committed. But, how was I, a newly hired teacher, supposed to appropriately impart…

As a conservative Jewish teenager growing up in a Jewish community, it should have been easy: It should have been easy finding a place to belong among the Jewish youth like myself. It should have been simple wearing pants in the summer because the only summer camp that was available at late notice was an orthodox summer camp and it (would) not be a sign of disrespectful for me to show anything above my ankles. It should have been easy, going to Hebrew School every Tuesday and Sunday to learn about people whose thoughts and values I should-should have shared, but could not bring myself to agree with some of the basic tenets of Judaism. I did not know how to reconcile the fact that Judaism did not reflect my values on justice for everyone and…

Three years ago I traveled with my colleagues to Israel. My stay was two months in Israel where I had an unforgettable experience. I visited many historic and significant places for myself as a Jew. To realize to this trip we had a requirement and it was that we have no choice to go to the army. The highest risky time I have experienced was during that trip in the army; the first time that I was going to defend a Country, I was on Israel border with Syria, and I carried and used a gun.…

With many people, there is one big reason, one big event, which let them know that being Jewish was for them. Some people came upon Judaism after a long period of spiritual questioning and searching, and others had their interest kindled after falling in love. I am not one of those people. Rather than having any one burst of insight, jewishness has always been a sort of ambient flavor in my life, whether I picked up on it at the time or not. The area I lived in had a fairly large jewish minority.…

As a child, having rules to follow wasn’t unheard of with my family. There was always a way to behavior with friends/family, at school, at home and out in the street. Often I found myself getting into trouble because I didn 't listen and also the fact that I always found some kind of way to slipping out of having to doing something that I knew I was supposed to do. But out of all the people in my family my mom was the strictest. When expectations set high, not meaning them meant my siblings and I typical had a week long cleaning punishments along with handing over all toys, games, and light up sneakers; about three times a week this happened to me.…
