Personal Narrative: My Visit To A Jewish Religion

Improved Essays
The mission: To broaden my world and open my mind up to something new by attending a different worship service than my own religion. I am a practicing Roman Catholic, baptized at two months old and have been attending church ever since. I made all of my sacraments growing up, and now my wife and I are raising our children Catholic as well. My wife and I do not consider ourselves super religious; we are not blind followers of the church and often disagree with some of the teachings of the church. We have been to other worship services at Christian Churches and Baptist Churches on occasion for special events, etc. For this paper I choose to go to a Jewish Church, otherwise known as a synagogue. I have long been curious about the Jewish religion

Our trip to the Jewish synagogue in Nashville, TN was cultural trip that taught us how the Jewish people lived, the different holidays, the different sects, and the different laws of the church. I learned the Jewish traditions and how the traditions have evolved from America. The lady who spoke to us in the Jewish synagogue was very passionate about her religion. She lives close to the synagogue because of religious purposes. She had strong views and told us about the life of a Jewish.…

“Our enemies have made the mistake that America’s enemies always make. They saw liberty and thought they saw weakness. And now, they see defeat.” George W. Bush stated this about the cowardly September 11th attacks. During that fateful day I was glued to my poorly constructed high school chair, gazing in disbelief what was unfolding on Mr. Cox’s History class television.…

I had similar experience, which was explained in No.1, on the edge of entering. I was church shopping when I came to the USA 20 years ago. I went to almost every church in the town. I didn’t feel welcomed, most churches wanted to convert me to Christianity in spite of telling them I am a Christian. For most of them since I am from India I am a Hindu and I need to be converted to Christianity.…

In my ethnographic trip I headed to a Non-Denomination Hispanic Christian Church. They hold services every weekend so I specifically chose Sunday night to hear their message. I chose this church because I have a grandmother who attends here and I felt comfortable to have someone I knew guide me. My initial thoughts prior to visiting this church was the same as the other churches I had visited before. I expected to walk in and sit down with no one really paying much attention to me.…

I am driven religiously; my religion is my moral compass that directs the course of my life. For example, stealing is considered a sin therefore I will not commit the act because it infringes on my morality. I believe religion should be used to make yourself more ethical. A Life in the Day of a Jew in Hiding I awake at 6:30 to the terrifying sound of thousands of bombs going off around me and stifle the scream that always seems to rise up in my throat, begging for me to let it out. I wearily crawl out of the warm, cosy bed that has been my refuge for the past 12 hours and enter the realms of reality. I hear the gentle pounding of feet against the floor and know that it must be almost breakfast time. My family and I always eat our breakfast at exactly 7am: it’s when the BBC radio is broadcasted. I listen to the radio with wide open ears: hoping for news of redemption; dreading the news of…

As an Orthodox Jew, religion plays a central role in my life. I attended a private Jewish high school, where much of my day was devoted to religious studies. While I learned about many different aspects of Judaism, my favorite subject was Talmud. Even though the Talmud has little practical relevance to modern life, or even contemporary Jewish law, I still found it to be a fascinating subject. On its surface Talmud may not seem like an engaging subject.…

When defining what an ideal Jew is, many factors can be considered, such as religious observance, relationship to Jewish culture, relationship to Israel and the Hebrew language, and connection to God. My ideal Jew is someone who really supports the community aspect of Judaism, and encouraging others within the community to participate in Jewish culture. An ideal Jew also incorporates certain Jewish values into their lives and allows them to govern their behavior and uses them to improve their relationships with fellow people. Altogether, the ideal Jew is someone who portrays Judaism to non-Jews and Jews alike as something special and unique, something to be admired and that they themselves want to be a part of. Jews should not in any way make…

For my interaction activity, I chose to visit a Synagogue with my uncle, David. During my undergraduate education, I took an elective focused on multicultural psychology, in which an Orthodox Jewish Professor taught the class. Though the class focused on many backgrounds and cultures, he would often give examples using his own identity as an Orthodox male. This intrigued me as a student, knowing that I had cousins and an uncle that also practiced a form of Judaism. I was not raised going to church and was never baptized, but faith was always something that my parents supported and encouraged in our home.…

Religion My dad and my mom were in church listening to the sermon, and he leaned over and complained to my mom that he had been noticing some very strange symptoms. He felt nauseous, his jaw felt more forward, his vision felt blurry, and many other oddities. My mom said he might want to go to a doctor but it could just be how he slept the night before. The man in front of them was Hunter Dyer, one of the leading neurosurgeons in the country.…

On my first day as a teacher at the Jewish Kids Group, I realized the most difficult part about my task for the week would be teaching nine-year-olds the evil reality of slavery. The experience of the Jewish people is riddled with poverty, exile and persecution, and the holiday of Passover recounts both the joyous exodus from Egypt but also the plight of the Jewish people in bondage. The freedom my people now enjoy and cherish is inextricably linked to the suffering my ancestors endured throughout history. In other words, a holiday like Passover cannot be understood or properly celebrated without recognizing the wickedness of Pharaoh and the atrocities he committed. But, how was I, a newly hired teacher, supposed to appropriately impart…

Another significant part of my Jewish identity lies in my tie to Israel. I was born into a family that has Israeli roots. That in itself, however, did not teach me to appreciate the existence of a homeland where Jews from various cultures and even races can find sanctuary. Schecter has heightened my awareness of the importance of the sate of Israel and has educated me in the workings of its government, history, and language (work in progress). I have learned that not all Jews are necessarily Zionists, but that I am.…

With many people, there is one big reason, one big event, which let them know that being Jewish was for them. Some people came upon Judaism after a long period of spiritual questioning and searching, and others had their interest kindled after falling in love. I am not one of those people. Rather than having any one burst of insight, jewishness has always been a sort of ambient flavor in my life, whether I picked up on it at the time or not. The area I lived in had a fairly large jewish minority.…
