Working within Human Services requires all professionals to have set values to operate in this field. The five most common values are best found when reviewing the Ethical Standards for Human Service Professionals. The five fundamental values include respecting the dignity and welfare of all people; promoting self-determination; honoring cultural diversity; advocating for social justice; and acting with integrity, honesty, genuineness and objectivity (“Ethical Standards,” 2016). Not all professionals have the same type of values set forth. Throughout this paper three of the five values will be discussed in depth, how each value instructs or impacts service delivery in positive and negative ways, the values of another profession, the comparison and contrast of values within the other profession, and examples of the two values not discussed impacting service delivery. Honoring cultural diversity is imperative within human services due to the different cultures which we will be working with. The values of honoring cultural diversity is best described as understanding the cultures of the clients we are working with and even when we don’t share the same personal values we accept the cultural value of the client out of respect to them.
