The two fundamental values discussed in the reading were humanism and egalitarianism. Humanism and egalitarianism focus on the individual worth, and strive for social equality. The social work values of humanism and egalitarianism challenge the social values of rugged individualism, autonomy, and self-efficiency because the social work values believe in equality regardless of societal status. Humanism and egalitarianism values believe all people should be provided the same access to resources to be able accomplish success in the same way as others, and to be able to so freely. The social values discussed do not necessarily believe in equality, but believe communities are separate entities that should be self-regulated regardless of the quality
