Identify the Problem or Dilemma
Although Ms. Gray has good intentions, the dilemma is certainly unethical. When using the 8 steps it’s important to distinguish every detail that makes the situation unethical. In this case, its crucial that we consider who’s involved. Not only does this dilemma involve Ms. Gray and Eric but the members of her household as well. Ms. Gray houses her daughter, grand-daughter, and nephew, which means they are now involved in the dilemma. In addition, Practitioners need to be mindful of what’s at stake. Ms. Gray could lose her license and be prevented from working in any helping profession. Moreover, Eric is affected by various aspects of the problem. They advocate for change in regulations and statutes when such legislation conflicts with ethical guidelines and/or client rights. Where laws are harmful to individuals, groups, or communities, human service professionals consider the conflict between the values of obeying the law and the values of serving people and may decide to initiate social action” (NHS, 2015). In general, people who work in the helping profession genuinely want to do what’s best for the client. As Ms. Grays colleague I would start with speaking with her first. “Human service professionals respond appropriately to the unethical and problematic behavior of colleagues. Usually, this means initially talking directly with the colleague and if no satisfactory resolution is achieved, reporting the colleague's behavior to supervisory or administrative staff” (NHS, 2015). In the hope that, she would be open minded and try to find another solution for Eric’s living arrangement, this would be the best approach. Nonetheless, as previously stated if the colleague disagrees with my ethical beliefs I would be obligated to report her to my supervisor. Unfortunately, this could lead to her losing her job in the helping profession while forcing Eric into another unstable living
