The Story of Beowulf is a great story about a brave hero that goes out of his way to save the lives of others that live in a far away land known as Herot. In the story of Beowulf he has great characteristics of being heroic in both his younger and also in his older days. Beowulf is one of the oldest epic poems still read today. Beowulf possesses many characteristics of epic heroes: he is on a quest, has superhuman strength, and often battles supernatural beings along his way to glory.
Like most epic heroes Beowulf is on a quest, he hears about a monster that is causing terror in the eyes of the Herotians.”When he heard about Grendel…. He ordered a boat that would ply the waves…. to sail the swan 's road and search out that king, the famous prince who needed defenders.” He is going to travel to Herot to kill Grendel, a fierce monster who has been terrorizing the people of Herot for 12 years “So Grendel ruled in defiance of right... For twelve winters, seasons of woe” (Heaney, ll. 144-147) and then sets off to save the people from the evil monster. He then takes his best warriors to go fight the beast hoping to rid the lands of it forever. Beowulf is not as welcomed as he thought he would cause the watchman greeted them with a challenge.”When the watchman on the wall, the Shieldings ' lookout saw shields glittering on the gangplank….. he had to find out who and what the arrivals were.
