The epic poem Beowulf tells a story of a hero coming from a different land to lift the shroud of evil off Herot. Hero’s in an epic poem must exemplify traits of bravery, strength, courage, and the want to achieve immortality through heroic actions and deeds. In the poem Beowulf the main character Beowulf exemplifies all of these traits. Bravery, all epic heroes possess this trait especially Beowulf. The beginning of the story, Grendel travels into Herot and kills thirty people. The stories of Grendel killing people makes its way to Beowulf, and he then travels to Denmark and into Herot just to kill the monster and lift the shroud of darkness. Beowulf is presented to be extremely strong. When Beowulf and Grendel meet swords and other mortal weapon will not hurt Grendel, so Beowulf grips Grendel’s arms with so much strength he rips off one of Grendel’s arms. Then Beowulf engages in battle with Grendel’s mother, and when Hrunting fails him there is a giant sword on the wall in the cave. “Then he saw, hanging on the wall, a heavy sword, hammered by giants, strong and blessed with their magic, the best of all weapons but so massive that no ordinary man could lift its carved and decorated length. He drew it from its scabbard, broke the chain on its hilt, and then, savage, now, angry and desperate, lifted it high over his head and struck with all the strength he had left Caught her in the neck and cut it through, broke bones and all. Her body fell to the floor lifeless.” (pg.54) The epic depicts the sword on the wall as being huge and made by giants. The epic even says that no ordinary man could lift the sword, and then Beowulf swings the sword with so much strength that he cuts Grendel’s mom in half. Beowulf saved so many people, slew so many monsters, and emerged from every battle, besides his final, victorious. The story of Beowulf has been around for ages, still being read and told. In the poem Beowulf has a monument built for him so all travelers and people can see it and remember him for eternity. Beowulf also does not slay all the monsters for the gold and spoils, he kills them for the glory, to be remembered, and because it is the right thing to do. So, what epic hero traits does Beowulf possess? Beowulf exemplifies all of the epic hero’s traits. Beowulf is courageous, brave, strong, courage, and the desire to become immortal through heroic deeds. From killing Grendel and showing bravery for killing Grendel’s mom. The giant sword that Beowulf killed Grendel’s mother with that was made for giants was a good example for strength. When Beowulf stands tall against the dragon when all of his followers flee.
