“The deleterious effects of poverty on child development have been well established in psychosocial research, with poverty identified as being among the most powerful risk factors for poor developmental outcomes. Children exposed to poverty have poorer cognitive outcomes and school performance, and they are at higher risk for antisocial behaviors and mental disorders”(Luby J, Belden A, Botteron K, et al., 2013). According to the prestigious publication, Journal of American Medical Association Pediatrics, being exposed to poverty at a very young age can significantly impact every aspect of development from cognitive problems, behavioral problems, social and emotional functioning, and school performance. Living in poverty children experience a lot of stress due to the family’s inability to provide effectively. Most impoverished families live in poor communities which do not have the resources to foster healthy development. Years of research has confirmed that being raised in poverty can negatively affect a child’s overall development (cite ALL) and has also demonstrated that providing better environments can improve psychological well-being and help children overcome stress (cite1&4).
Wealthy people might believe that they have no obligation to care about children who grow up in poverty. However, all of society must care about how childhood poverty affects brain development, cognitive development, and social-emotional development of the young because the majority of our…
