Once again this is caused by another symptom of PTSD called reactivity or dissociation symptom. This symptom includes feeling tense, getting startled easily, having trouble sleeping, out of body experiences, and having outbursts of anger(NAMI). After murdering not one, but two of his friends, Macbeth more than likely, doesn 't sleep well or doesn 't sleep at all. Lack of sleep causes tension. Macbeth also begins having a few out of body experiences. Before he kills Duncan, he sees a dagger that points him towards Duncan 's room. The daggers presence is taunting him to commit the murder, “Is this a dagger which I see before me, the handle toward my hand?” (2 1. 33-34). Macbeth later has another hallucination. After he sends murderers to kill Banquo, Macbeth is haunted by Banquo 's ghost which is seen at Macbeth 's banquet. Only Macbeth can see the ghost. He freaks out and challenges the ghost to a duel, “Take any shape but that, and my firm nerves shall never tremble: or be alive again, and dare me to the desert with thy sword.” (3.4. 102-104). His symptoms were sleeplessness, paranoia, mood changes, re-experiencing, avoidance and reactivity. His military actions and what he witnessed on the battlefield had a profound effect on his life which ended up in numerous tragic events such as murder, suicide, and his own death as a criminal. PTSD is a problem in today 's society. One can look back in history to the time of Shakespeare and see that there were individuals suffering from the same disorder due to war. PTSD is one of the many negative outcomes of war that has affected people’s behavior deeply throughout time, even before the disorder had a name. With time, therapy, and medication, the character Macbeth could have become a functioning member of the Renaissance society, but then again Shakespeare knew that normal doesn’t entertain, crazy
