According to Ferdik, (2013), “Police misconduct and corruption have the potential to erode public trust and confidence in both policing and government agencies” (p. 104). I firmly believe that introducing the oversight agencies throughout all levels of law enforcement is a great way to potentially restore the confidence and the public’s trust back in the law enforcement agencies. When those agencies are brought in to monitor the law enforcement agencies, it forces the crooked law enforcement officers to ‘straighten up’ and abide by the rules and regulations they’re supposed to abide, which protects us, the citizens of the United States. Not all law enforcement officers are crooked; however, there are a handful of officers that abuse the badge and their power. According to Seybold, (2015), civilian oversight has some meaningful deterrence on individual actors while also providing a functioning mechanism to address local systemic issues (p. 1051). If this weren’t in place, there would be officers all over the country abusing the power that they are given with that badge that they place upon their chest on a daily …show more content…
According to Prenzler, (2001), “the tradition of external police oversight emerged in the latter years of the twentieth century in response to a number of commissions of inquiry and exposes of corruption misconduct and criminal activity by police officers”. In turn, many countries throughout the world, like the United Kingdom, Australia, and others, would be introduced to the oversight models. I believe that a large percentage of corruption or misconduct doesn’t actually happen within an agency; however, there is that limited percentage of corruption that happens throughout the United States and the world. There are arguments both for and against the oversights and whether or not they are good or bad. If I were to pick a side, I would stand on that side that is for the oversights being introduced. I firmly believe that we should invest heavier in these companies and hold our law enforcement agencies to a similar standard like the United States military is held to. If the agencies are held to a higher standard like the U.S military, and the oversights are making sure that they’re held to that standard, there would be a lot less corruption. If the standards and the oversights weren’t in place, I believe that we would witness increased levels of corruption, which would lead to a lot of protesting by the
