Many minorities are targets of mistreatment by law enforcement simply on the stereotypical ideologies placed on them. Many of these negative stereotypes derive from the media and mainstream films. White supremacy has been able to flourish around the world simply because of the control it has on national and local air waves. Displaying a negative image of white people is a rare occurrence on cable television sets and movie theatres around the world. However, the negative stereotypes of Blacks, Latinos, Muslims, Asians and Arabs are a common feature to many TV shows and movies shown around the world. Even the principles of broadcast and print media is constructed to display negative images of minorities and positive images of white people. Mentioning the power of the media helps fuel the importance of public awareness on the inequality and injustice practices happening in the country. If the people in power control the media, the people in power control the public’s opinion on certain things. In this nation and anywhere else on earth you are either, “pro”, meaning you support it or “anti” meaning you are against it. They are given a badge and powers placing them above the public but still maintaining the concept of working for the public. This is a psychological mistake that has led to the ill advisement and misconduct of thousands of law enforcement officials. Police brutality is a touchy subject to many people especially people associated with law enforcement officials who truly have the best interest of the people and would never abuse the powers given to them. Unfortunately, there are law enforcement officials who don’t abide by certain rules and legislations placed on them after given the power of protecting the public. The Rodney King incident which took place in March of 1991 was one of the first publically shown videos displaying the misconduct of the Los Angeles Police Department. For years, many allegations and reports were placed upon the LAPD but later left on deaf ears to protect the, “integrity”, of the LAPD. The four law enforcement officers associated with the incident were acquitted of all charges. The justice systems actions towards the incident outraged millions across the country and triggered the 1992 Los Angeles riots killing 55 people and injuring over 2,000 individuals (Wice).
