In the modern world many people use social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, especially among young people. However, according to Donegan (2012) ,“Bullying has been engrained concept especially in American society. Technological bullying, known today as cyberbullying, has allowed the problem to expand, become more elusive, and even harder to define. A thorough analysis of various case studies, statistical research, law cases, and news articles was conducted to understand the issue of cyberbullying and to find preventative measures that should be taken.” This essay will discuss the cause and the effects of cyberbullying on individuals and society.

The first cause of cyberbullying is the home environment. Schwarz (2006) highlights a study by researchers from the University of Washington and Indiana University, which show that “Children who were exposed to violence in the home engaged in higher levels of physical bullying than youngsters who were not witnesses to such behavior”. Thus, the children who experienced bullying at home have at greater risk of bullying others. In addition, bullying at home by parents can include both physical and verbal abuse by calling names, constant nitpicking and the continuing frustration to their children (Befrienders worldwide 2012).
