Water, salt, and glucose intake fluctuate daily. Despite this, plasma volume, osmolality, and pH remain within extremely narrow limits. Plasma volume directly impacts the blood pressure of the body. If the blood pressure is too high, mechanical stress is put upon the arterial walls and the heart, which may lead to the organs becoming weakened and hardened. If the blood pressure is too low, cells may not be provided with sufficient oxygen and nutrients to survive (Widmaier et al., 2015). Maintaining a stable plasma osmolality is critical for cells to function normally. If the plasma becomes hypoosmotic relative to the cell, the cell swells and may even lyse. If the plasma is hyperosmotic relative to the cell, the cell crenates (Widmaier et al., 2015). Plasma pH has a serious effect on the all the body 's systems because if the plasma pH deviates too much in either direction, the cells can no longer function normally. Homeostasis refers to any process by which the body keeps its internal environment, including its plasma volume, osmolality, and pH, within extremely narrow limits. The kidneys play a significant role in maintaining the homeostasis by regulating water levels, balancing the concentration of solutes, ridding the body of waste products, and holding on to important substances (Widmaier et al., 2015).
