People were “starving” for rain as they suffered the drought. People looked for a way out of the storm and many times they could only hope to find shelter before the next wave hit.“The dust was beginning to make living things sick. Animals were found dead in the fields, their stomachs coated with two inches of dirt. People spat up clods of dirt as big around as a pencil. An epidemic raged throughout the Plains: they called it dust pneumonia.”("Surviving the Dust Bowl"). Dust pneumonia was a big issue during the dust bowl. Lives were lost daily and livestock was found dead because with every breath they would breathe in the dust. Because of the loss of livestock the people had to pay more for food and they had a hard time providing for their families.The dust bowl was a tragic time when many lives were lost. Dust pneumonia was spreading like a plague. Children could not go out and play without worrying about the next storm or when it would hit.
