Describe In class on February 17th, the first group presented on the discrimination of African Americans. To start with, they focused on the history of African Americans in the United States. They showed a Ted Talk which gave a brief overview of the Atlantic Slave Trade. Then, they moved on to talk about the Great Migration, where millions of black African Americans moved north to urban cities for employment opportunities in throughout the 20th century. The group then presented on Jim Crow laws and how they were basically a reinvention of slavery. And finally, they talked about the current Black Lives matter movement which has swept across the entire nation and has brought the discussion of discrimination against blacks back into public discourse. After presenting the history of African Americans in the United States, the group discussed the wealth and incarceration gap between African Americans and whites. They presented several statistical graphics to illustrate how white’s median net household worth are nearly 20 times higher than the median net household worth of African Americans. Also, black men are six times more likely to be incarcerated than white men. The group also touched on Kenneth and Mamie Clark’s 1940 doll experiments. They discussed how the psychologists concluded that black children have lower self esteem.
