Formally known as Bruce Jenner, a television reality star and retired Olympic gold medal-winning decathlete made the news. Jenner revealed a new identity as a trans woman in April 2015 and changed her name from Bruce to Caitlyn. Caitlyn Jenner had the advantage to transition genders in over a couple of months, and on the other hand your average trans woman would normally take a few years, or even her lifetime to get to that point. Caitlyn Jenner has had the advantage and privilege of being holding an upper class status and a famous celebrity title bringing support from thousands of people from her life, and social media with over 3.9 million followers on Twitter. Holding that title and money, she has had the opportunity to find the best surgeons to help her transition from male to female, and also being able to heal in a safe and clean environment. While an ordinary trans woman (especially of color) struggles to find acceptance in the world, and is not accepted by her family having the possibility of being kicked out of home. To those that have no home to return to, finding a way to make money to support oneself for food, drugs, hormones, or silicone for implants to feel beautiful and wanted makes me sad. Reading about how much beauty factors into what someone puts himself or herself through mentally and physically, and wanting to pass as someone born a female is saddening.
