How far would you go for love? Happiness? Fame?. The pieces of literature I will be analysing for this essay are “The Monkeys Paw”, “The Devil in Tom Walker”, and “The Masque of the Red Death”. I believe that in all romantic literature works, the protagonists has an urge or pull to do something, but gets warned a couple times before something bad happens to stop to walk away. The protagonists doesn’t listen and has to face the consequences(With the exception of “The Monkey's Paw”) The first example, “The Monkey's Paw”, The protagonist -Mr. White and his family- have a guest come and visit them. The guest was an ex-sergeant who retired from the military. He is fiddling with a doohickey. The family asks him what it is and the sergeant responds “"Well, it's just a bit of what you might call magic, perhaps." The people asked what the first man who owned the paw wished for and the sergeant responded, ‘"The first man had his three wishes. Yes," was the reply, "I don't know what the first two were, but the third was for death. That's how I got the paw."’ This right here is the first warning. The sergeant just TOLD the family that the man wished for death. If this doesn’t scream THROW IT IN THE FIRE then I don’t know what does. The second warning was that the sergeant threw the monkey's paw into the fire and then when Mr. White snatched it up he said don't blame me for the consequences. “...suddenly threw it upon the fire…’But I warn you of the consequences.”’ Again the sergeant warned the family that nothing good will come from the monkey's paw. In the short story, “The Masque of the Red Death”, The protagonist Prince prospero’s kingdom faces the crises that there is a plage that is going around called the red death. It takes people 30 minutes to die after the get the red death. Instead of doing anything about it, the prince throws a party for 1,000 of his friends. “All these and security were within. Without was the ‘Red Death.’” Ithink foreshadows that the red death is going to interrupt their great party. I think this warns the reader how the red death is going to kill everyone at the party because how it deliberately says “the

In “The Devil in Tom Walker” Tom takes a shortcut home one day and runs into a swamp. The swamp is very supernatural and Tom runs into the devil. There are a lot of trees there that strong on the outside but are all dead on the inside. They also have peoples names on them. This warns the reader and tom that something weird is going on and he should leave. Then the devil tries to make a bargain with Tom and Tom talks to his wife about it. His wife says he should talk the offer, so because of that he doesn't. His wife then tries to take the bargain with the devil, but the devil kills her and leaves her heart and liver in her apron.
