Clayton Lockett, a 38 y.o. male died from a heart attack after a botch lethal injection in Oklahoma. During his execution, the paramedic failed to place an IV after several attempts. After assistance from the physician, the IV was finally placed in Lockett’s groin. Lockett was then given midazolam. After declared unconscious, Lockett was then injected with vecuronium bromide and potassium chloride. While these last 2 drugs were given, Lockett began to moan, jerk, raise his head, tried to speak and blood was everywhere. The chamber curtains had to be shut and the execution called off. But, it was too late. 43 minutes after the execution begun Lockett died. Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Robert Patton stated that a vein blew up or exploded, it collapsed, and the drugs were not getting into the system like they were supposed to (CNN and the guardian).
Now, Clayton Lockett is not the first condemned inmate to die from a botched lethal injection. Since “1985…over twenty-five botched executions have been reported, mostly based on direct observation” (Groner, Hippocratic, 2008, 896). Not only that, but lethal injections are supposed to be a humane way to die. In Lockett’s case and in others it was not. The physician present could not do anything for him all they could do is stand by and watch.
